SuperRare (RARE) is a decentralized marketplace focused on curated digital art in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The platform was established in 2018 as a pioneering force in the NFT art space, providing artists with a way to mint, showcase, and sell unique digital artworks on the Ethereum blockchain. 

SuperRare operates under a decentralized model through RareDAO, which is governed by RARE token holders. The DAO structure allows holders to vote on various proposals, including changes to platform fees, new features, and overall strategic direction. This approach decentralizes the control of the platform, promoting a community-led approach to curating digital art and managing the SuperRare ecosystem. SuperRare leverages open-source ERC-721 smart contracts on Ethereum to ensure that all transactions are transparent and non-custodial, meaning the platform never takes possession of users' assets.

SuperRare’s "Sovereign Minting Contracts" enables artists to create and sell NFTs independently. This system enhances artist autonomy while also providing provenance and security through the blockchain. SuperRare focuses on a decentralized curation model, progressively shifting more control to its community, which includes artists, collectors, and curators. The platform also features "Spaces," which are independently curated storefronts on SuperRare, further enabling decentralized curation and community engagement.

The native cryptocurrency of the SuperRare ecosystem, RARE serves as a governance token, a staking token for reputation-building, and a medium for community-driven decision-making. 

The total supply of RARE is 1 billion tokens. The token distribution is allocated as follows: 150 million RARE were distributed via a retroactive airdrop to early community members, 400 million RARE are allocated to the Community Treasury, which vests linearly over four years, 255 million RARE are assigned to core contributors with a three-year vesting period, 145 million RARE to early investors with similar vesting schedules, and 50 million RARE to strategic partners and future contributors.
