Intro

Syscoin (SYS) is a blockchain protocol that merges the security of Bitcoin with the functionality of Ethereum, creating a single, scalable platform that supports decentralized applications (dApps) and custom tokens. Launched in 2014 by Sebastian Schepis, Syscoin combines Bitcoin’s proof-of-work (PoW) security with Ethereum-compatible smart contract capabilities through a dual-chain architecture that includes a Bitcoin-based UTXO blockchain and an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible network called NEVM. This architecture allows Syscoin to offer fast, secure, and low-cost transactions while supporting features like optimistic and zero-knowledge (ZK) rollups for enhanced scalability.

Syscoin employs a unique combination of technologies, such as its Z-DAG protocol and ChainLocks mechanism. Z-DAG, or Zero-Confirmation Directed Acyclic Graph, is a transaction layer that provides high throughput, ranging from 30,000 to 145,000 transactions per second (TPS). It enables fast, low-fee token transfers while leveraging Bitcoin’s PoW for security. ChainLocks, derived from Dash, enhances the security of PoW blockchains by using Long Living Masternode Quorums (LLMQs) to decide the next block through a consensus agreement, which prevents 51% attacks and improves network stability.

Syscoin uses the NEVM, a modified EVM that supports layer-1 and layer-2 scaling with ZK-Rollups, enabling smart contracts and DeFi applications to run at low costs while achieving high transaction speeds. NEVM supports up to 210,000 TPS with near-instant finality, addressing Ethereum's scalability issues and offering an efficient alternative for dApp developers.

The tokenomics of Syscoin are influenced by Ethereum’s EIP-1559 proposal, with a deflationary mechanism in place. The total supply of SYS is currently around 792.6 million, with a maximum supply of 888 million tokens. SYS tokens are used for transaction fees, minting Syscoin Platform Tokens (SPTs), and governance. Users can participate in network governance by hosting masternodes, which requires holding a minimum of 100,000 SYS and allows them to earn rewards by providing services to the blockchain.
