Intro

Bittensor (TAO) is a decentralized machine learning protocol that fundamentally changes how AI models and machine learning capabilities are shared and developed across a distributed network. Founded in 2019 by AI researchers Jacob Steeves and Ala Shaabana, along with a pseudonymous whitepaper author, Yuma Rao, Bittensor aims to create a global network that incentivizes the collaborative training of AI models.

Originally envisioned as a parachain on Polkadot named Finney, Bittensor launched its own blockchain, Nakamoto, in March 2023 to operate independently from the Polkadot ecosystem, modeling its design after the Bitcoin network. This move was aimed at fostering a robust decentralized framework to facilitate the development, sharing, and monetization of machine intelligence in a peer-to-peer format.

Bittensor introduces unique consensus mechanisms like Proof of Intelligence and a decentralized Mixture of Experts model to facilitate equitable reward distribution and foster a marketplace for AI models. This setup enables a unique machine learning environment where developers can train, share, and monetize their AI capabilities using the native TAO token.

The protocol operates through a layered system including miners, validators, and a consumer layer, ensuring that contributions to the network are fairly rewarded. Miners generate responses to queries, which are then validated and ranked, with rewards distributed in TAO tokens. This approach not only enhances the efficiency and security of the AI training process but also ensures a transparent and fair distribution of incentives within the network.

TAO is used for network governance, allowing token holders to vote on crucial decisions affecting the platform's future, such as network upgrades, feature implementations, and the allocation of resources, ensuring that Bittensor remains adaptive and responsive to its community’s needs. Through this governance model, TAO holders are directly empowered to shape the network’s development.
